A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE LEGISLATIVE EDUCATION STUDY COMMITTEE TO STUDY THE POLICIES AND PRACTICES OF ALBUQUERQUE PUBLIC SCHOOLS RELATING TO PARTICIPATION IN AND SEEKING GRANT FUNDING FOR EDUCATIONAL STUDY PROGRAMS.



WHEREAS, studying and learning mathematics is an essential part of every child's education; and

WHEREAS, many studies have shown that children who are able to master the subject of mathematics perform better in other critical academic subject areas; and

WHEREAS, regardless of the field of work pursued, a well-rounded education that includes a strong foundation in mathematics is fundamental in preparing a child to perform and compete in a globalized workplace and in preparing a child for studies at institutions of higher education; and

WHEREAS, the national science foundation has put forth a grant of two hundred fifty thousand dollars ($250,000) to Albuquerque public schools for an interactive math program; and

WHEREAS, students of Albuquerque public schools would gain invaluable learning experiences from such an interactive math program; and

WHEREAS, Albuquerque public schools, for reasons unknown, have failed to pursue the grant money or to implement or participate in an interactive math program; and

WHEREAS, funds for educational programs in our public schools are difficult to acquire;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislative education study committee be requested to study the policies and practices of Albuquerque public schools relating to participation in and seeking grant funding for educational study programs; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the study include an inquiry into the status of Albuquerque public schools' grant proposal to the national science foundation for funding for an interactive math program; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Albuquerque public schools be requested to ensure that the grant proposal for funding for the interactive math program be submitted in a timely manner to the national science foundation; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be sent to members of the legislative education study committee and its director, members of the New Mexico legislative council and the superintendent of Albuquerque public schools.
