A MEMORIAL

HONORING THE NEW MEXICO MEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVE IN THE RESERVE FORCES OF THE ARMY, NAVY, MARINES, AIR FORCE AND COAST GUARD AND IN THE AIR NATIONAL GUARD AND ARMY NATIONAL GUARD.



WHEREAS, providing the necessary personnel and expertise to meet the needs of a nation in crisis is what the military reserves and the national guard are all about; and

WHEREAS, there are 1.3 million reservists and guardsmen in the seven reserve forces that make up nearly half of this nation's armed forces; and

WHEREAS, President George W. Bush has approved the call to federal active duty of up to 50,000 national guardsmen and reservists in connection with last Tuesday's terrorist attacks on America; and

WHEREAS, as of now, after each arm of the service has reviewed its mission and identified its personnel requirements, it is estimated that about 35,000 reservists and guardsmen, including 10,000 from the Army, 13,000 from the Air Force, 3,000 from the Navy, 7,500 from the Marine Corps and 2,000 from the Coast Guard, could be called upon to serve; and

WHEREAS, the dedicated men and women serving as reservists and guardsmen are highly trained individuals who stand ready to provide combat support and combat support services, as well as medical, transportation and other necessary services in support of our standing military; and

WHEREAS, approximately 5,802 New Mexicans sacrifice their time each month and volunteer to serve in the military reserves and national guard; and

WHEREAS, with pride and honor, New Mexico's volunteer service people are already serving their country in locations all over the globe; standing side by side with United States troops in places such as Kosovo and Saudi Arabia; and

WHEREAS, we expect that a significant number of New Mexico's reservists and guardsmen will be called upon by their country to move on a moment's notice and to give our active military the resources and support it will need to deploy overseas and to sustain combat troops during this critical time in American history; and

WHEREAS, all New Mexicans look proudly upon our citizenry who serve this country in the military reserves and national guard;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that New Mexico's military reservists and national guardsmen be thanked for their continued commitment and dedication to the security and well-being of their country; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all New Mexicans join in saluting these reservists and national guardsmen, along with their families, as they stand by, willing and ready to serve their country in this time of national crisis; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be sent to each of the state's military reserve offices and the offices of the national guard.
