A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT AND THE TOURISM DEPARTMENT TO TAKE THE LEAD IN DEVELOPING A PROPOSAL TO PROMOTE GOLF IN NEW MEXICO.



WHEREAS, more than eighty public and private golf courses are located in New Mexico, providing entertainment and recreation for countless New Mexicans and visitors to the state; and

WHEREAS, the golf industry is responsible for the creation and maintenance of jobs and economic activity throughout New Mexico, ranging from the jobs created directly at golf courses to jobs created at lodging and eating establishments to the economic activity that ripples throughout the state from those jobs; and

WHEREAS, vigorously promoting New Mexico as a destination for tourists, conventioneers and other visitors who have an interest in golf would pay off many times over in increased economic activity; and

WHEREAS, there are many groups that would be willing to assist the economic development department and the tourism department in developing a strategy to promote golf in New Mexico;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the economic development department and the tourism department be requested to develop a proposal to promote golf in New Mexico; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the economic development department and the tourism department be requested to invite representatives from the golf industry in New Mexico, including private, public and university representatives, professional and amateur golf representatives, Native American representatives and youth golf representatives, to assist with the development of a proposal to promote golf in New Mexico and to report findings and recommendations to the legislative finance committee and other appropriate interim committees of the legislature; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretaries of economic development and tourism.
