A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF NEW MEXICO INSTITUTE OF MINING AND TECHNOLOGY TO HONOR CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO DONATED LAND TO THE NEW MEXICO SCHOOL OF MINES.



WHEREAS, the New Mexico school of mines was founded and located at Socorro by the territorial legislature of 1889; and

WHEREAS, the New Mexico school of mines was forbidden by the territorial legislature to build any facilities until twenty acres of land was acquired by the school; and

WHEREAS, Juan Jose and Francisca Baca, Estevan and Catalina Baca, Severo and Josefina Baca, Edward and Emma Hubbard, Antonio Abeyta y Montoya, Robert Collins and Jacob Naumer donated twenty-two and one-fifth acres of land to the territory of New Mexico for the New Mexico school of mines in 1889; and

WHEREAS, the generosity of these individuals was crucial to the development of the New Mexico school of mines; and

WHEREAS, the name of the New Mexico school of mines was changed to the New Mexico institute of mining and technology in 1951; and

WHEREAS, the New Mexico institute of mining and technology is currently a world-renowned college of the mineral industries;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the board of regents of New Mexico institute of mining and technology honor the individuals and the families of the individuals who donated land to the New Mexico school of mines in 1889; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the board of regents of New Mexico institute of mining and technology.
