A JOINT MEMORIAL

DESIGNATING FEBRUARY 6, 2003 AS "EDUCATION FIRST DAY".

WHEREAS, New Mexico first, a statewide organization, brings residents together to discuss the critical issues that face New Mexico and to develop consensus on how the issues should be addressed; and

WHEREAS, New Mexico first was created by Senators Jeff Bingaman and Pete Domenici to be a bipartisan resource to help enrich the lives of all New Mexicans; and

WHEREAS, in 1999, the twenty-second New Mexico town hall brought together a broad and diverse group of New Mexicans to focus on the issue of education in the state; and

WHEREAS, this group came to a consensus that New Mexico's system of public education is inadequate, improving the system must be the state's highest priority and specific far-reaching solutions will take much political willpower and personal sacrifice; and

WHEREAS, in 2003, a powerful majority of government, business, education and community leaders from throughout New Mexico have come together to create a vision of what New Mexico's system of public education could be;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor be requested to declare February 6, 2003 as "Education First Day" in honor and celebration of the commitment and dedication of all those who work toward the improvement of New Mexico schools and the future of New Mexico's children; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the governor.
