A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO SEEK FEDERAL FUNDING FOR THE PURPOSE OF WIDENING UNITED STATES ROUTE 666 TO FOUR LANES.



WHEREAS, United States highway 666 is popularly referred to as "death road" because of the number of fatal accidents, including head-on collisions, that occur on it each year because it is, partly, only two lanes wide; and

WHEREAS, numerous New Mexico residents must travel on highway 666 to go from Gallup to Shiprock or from Gallup to the Colorado state line; and

WHEREAS, many tourists travel on highway 666 to reach Shiprock; and

WHEREAS, highway 666 is part of several school bus routes and participants in head start programs must travel on highway 666;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico congressional delegation be requested to seek federal funding for the purpose of widening United States highway 666 to four lanes; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be sent to the members of the New Mexico congressional delegation.
