A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE OFFICE OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS TO RECOMMEND METHODS TO MAINTAIN THE OPERATION OF CASA SAN YSIDRO.

     WHEREAS, Casa San Ysidro in Corrales is a unique compound of historic buildings, re-creations of buildings and new constructions that includes a collection of artifacts and antiques that illustrates life in New Mexico in the 1700s and 1800s; and

     WHEREAS, this unique collection and the compound's buildings and land were acquired by the city of Albuquerque in 1997; and

     WHEREAS, the cost of operating Casa San Ysidro has proved at times to be burdensome to the city of Albuquerque, causing the city to seek financial support from other public and private sources; and

     WHEREAS, it would be in the interest of all New Mexicans to maintain the current operation and programming of Casa San Ysidro at its current location in Corrales;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the office of cultural affairs be requested to study the feasibility of declaring Casa San Ysidro a state monument; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the office of cultural affairs be requested to include in its study an examination of the feasibility of executing an agreement with the city of Albuquerque under which the state and city would share the collection of artifacts and antiques; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the office of cultural affairs be requested to report its findings and recommendations to the legislature prior to the second session of the forty-sixth legislature; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the office of cultural affairs.
