A MEMORIAL

EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES FOR THE DEATH OF DR. SCOTT KING SANDERS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     WHEREAS, Dr. Scott King Sanders passed away on October 30, 2003 at the age of fifty-four after sustaining a lengthy illness; and

     WHEREAS, he was born in 1949 in Dallas, Texas, and lived most of his adult life in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, he received his master of divinity and his doctorate of ministry at southwestern Baptist theological seminary; and

     WHEREAS, he served as director of missions in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for the Baptist convention from 1977 to 1986; and

     WHEREAS, he served as founder of Rodeo road Baptist church in Santa Fe where he faithfully served as pastor for thirteen years; and

     WHEREAS, he became an active participant in New Mexico state politics representing the Christian community, and he was a very successful liaison for the Baptist convention of New Mexico to the New Mexico legislature for over twenty years; and

     WHEREAS, he was a renowed leader in ethics and religious liberty and helped form the Christian life committee of New Mexico and the Baptist legislative breakfast sponsored by the New Mexico Baptist convention; and

     WHEREAS, he served as a board member of the national ethics and religious liberty commission as well as a long-time member of the state Christian life committee; and

     WHEREAS, he was a Christian ethics leader in New Mexico, and was respected by New Mexico governors, other elected officials and legislators for the past twenty-five years; and

     WHEREAS, he served from 1998 until his passing as the director of communications and director of constituent services for the ethics and religious liberty commission of the southern Baptist convention of the United States; and

     WHEREAS, he most recently served as a devoted member of Spotswood Baptist church where he continuously demonstrated his faith and servitude as a Sunday school teacher and deacon; and

     WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his parents, James "Ike" Sanders and Bobbie McWhorter Sanders; and

     WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife of thirty years, Rose; children, Courtney and Michael; twin sister Julia and her husband, Roger Pierce; sister Shirley and her husband, Nat Paul Gibbs; brother-in-law Jack Stegemann and his wife, Alice; and many other relatives and friends;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that condolences be extended to the family and friends of Dr. Scott King Sanders.
