SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 105 Appropriates $1.3 million from the general fund to the public education depart-
ment for public school advanced placement initiatives.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $1.3 million contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund.
Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2007 shall revert
to the general fund.
SB105 provides for the expenditure of funds in the following manner:
•
$700 thousand to expand advanced placement for nontraditional participants.
•
$300 thousand for an advanced placement summer institute.
•
$100 thousand to expand advanced placement opportunities for rural school students.
•
$200 thousand to expand advanced placement teacher development.

SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
•
If this bill were passed, funding would cover professional development and activities to
support and expand AP Programs in New Mexico’s public schools.
•
Funding would continue and expand Advanced Placement Initiatives no longer funded by
the Federal Government.
•
Advanced Placement Initiatives will better prepare New Mexico students to succeed in
college.
•
Public school students represent 87.8% of all New Mexico test takers on AP exams.
•
2005 AP Exam Data reveal that New Mexico is making progress in closing the Achieve-
