SENATE JOINT MEMORIAL 72

47th legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - second session, 2006

INTRODUCED BY

Stuart Ingle

A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF GAME AND FISH SHORTEN THE QUAIL HUNTING SEASON TO EIGHT WEEKS.

     WHEREAS, the current quail hunting season is too long and, consequently, threatens an ample bird population, especially when combined with the drought conditions plaguing New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the desert grasslands that is the quail's natural habitat is more fragile than it appears, and a long quail season can be punishing to that environment; and

     WHEREAS, the long season also exacerbates the problems that occur when hunters pursue their sport on private property;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of game and fish be requested to shorten the quail hunting season to eight weeks; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the director of the department of game and fish.
