A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING JANUARY 20, 2006 AS "SCHOOLS ON THE RISE DAY" IN THE NEW MEXICO SENATE.

 

     WHEREAS, New Mexico's educational standards and assessments and school accountability are now among the best in the country; and

     WHEREAS, the quality counts 2006 report indicates that teacher quality has improved for the fourth straight year and is ranked seventh in the country, demonstrating that educators in New Mexico are raising the bar for all students; and

     WHEREAS, closing the achievement gap in New Mexico's schools should be a matter of concern for all residents of the state; and

     WHEREAS, three hundred seventy-two of the state's public schools are meeting or exceeding adequate yearly progress and twenty-eight school districts are recognized as quality districts in which all schools made adequate yearly progress this year; and

     WHEREAS, through the hard work and dedication of faculty and administrators, thirteen public schools are no longer designated as schools in need of improvement, having made adequate yearly progress for two consecutive years, including Armijo, Duranes and Los Padillas elementary schools from Albuquerque public schools; Jaramillo elementary school from Belen consolidated schools; Santo Domingo elementary school from Bernalillo public schools; Ojo Amarillo elementary school from Central consolidated schools; Hernandez elementary school from Española public schools; Seboyeta elementary school from Grants-Cibola county schools; Rio Grande elementary school from Hatch Valley public schools; Taylor elementary school from Hobbs municipal schools; Jemez Valley middle school from Jemez Valley public schools; Midway elementary school from Socorro consolidated schools; and Valley elementary school from West Las Vegas public schools;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that January 20, 2006 be designated "Schools on the Rise Day" to honor and showcase the thirteen schools identified; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the public education department for distribution to each honored school and school district.
