A MEMORIAL
COMMENDING SANGER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL NANCY HAVINK ON
BEING NAMED NEW MEXICO'S 2006 PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR.
WHEREAS, Nancy Havink is the much-loved and respected
principal of Sanger elementary school in Hobbs; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Havink has served her district as a testing
coordinator, a mentor for new principals and a developer of
workshops on writing instruction and classroom computer use;
and
WHEREAS, Nancy Havink is known for the many unique and
special ways she finds to bond with her students; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Havink is an active principal whose
commitment is clearly evident through programs she has designed
to meet the academic and social needs of all students, and
through her firmly established community ties with parents and

local business organizations; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Havink's accomplishments include morning
math and English "challenges" to stimulate students' thinking
each day, a hands-on science lab, a thirty-minute writing
program and a parent-staffed resource room for learning
enrichment; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Havink's strong belief in hands-on learning
is visible on the walls of Sanger elementary, which are
decorated with colorful student-painted national and state
symbols; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Havink is recognized as a school principal
who consistently goes above and beyond what is expected in the
usual school program; and
WHEREAS, the national distinguished principals program was
established in 1984 as an annual event to honor exemplary
elementary and middle school principals who set the pace,
character and quality of the education children receive during
their early school years; and
WHEREAS, the national distinguished principals program is
jointly sponsored by the United States department of education
and the national association of elementary school principals;
and
WHEREAS, the national distinguished principals program
honors one principal from each state who shows a strong
commitment to the principalship through active membership in

professional associations; is respected by students,
colleagues, parents and the community at large; assumes an
active role in the community; is a leader in civic, religious
or humanitarian activities; shows strong educational leadership
by setting high expectations for school staff and students; and
maintains an orderly purposeful learning environment; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Havink was selected under the national
distinguished principals program as New Mexico's principal of
the year for 2006;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE
OF NEW MEXICO that Nancy Havink be commended for her
outstanding work as principal of Sanger elementary school; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Nancy Havink be commended for
earning the distinguished honor of being named New Mexico's
principal of the year; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
transmitted to Nancy Havink and Sanger elementary school.
