FOR THE LEGISLATIVE EDUCATION STUDY COMMITTEE

 

AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE CREATION OF A STATEWIDE SERVICE LEARNING FRAMEWORK.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Thirty thousand dollars ($30,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the public education department for expenditure in fiscal year 2009 for the development of a statewide service learning framework. The public education department, in collaboration with the children, youth and families department, shall appoint a task force, which shall develop a service learning framework that addresses the need for consistent, fair and equitable implementation of service learning programs for academic credit. The framework shall include factors such as standardizing the definition of service learning, aligning service learning curricula with standards and benchmarks, professional development, data collection in the student teacher accountability reporting system and an evaluation component. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2009 shall revert to the general fund.
