Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial 33 resolves that Saturday, February 9, 2008, be proclaimed “New Mexico
Highlands University Day" at the Legislature. Copies of this Memorial are to be transmitted to
the Board of Regents of New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU).
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
SJM proposes the following:
•
Since 1983, NMHU has provided innumerable opportunities in educational advancement
and professional development for New Mexicans.
•
NMHU has produced first-rate graduates in the fields of education, social work, business
and arts and sciences.
•
NMHU is dedicated to serving students from distinctive cultural, socioeconomic,
linguistic, geographic, religious and educational backgrounds.
•
NMHU is committed to excellence in teaching, discovering, preserving and applying
knowledge and is responsive to new opportunities for community-based partnerships,
economic development, research and public service.
•
NMHU envisions becoming the premier Hispanic-serving institution in the country,
welcoming students from al ethnic backgrounds, while providing unrivaled quality higher
education.
•
NMHU believes wholeheartedly in the concept of student-centered education and
personal attentiveness to the individual student.
•
NMHU is determined in its focus on its multi-ethnic student body with special emphasis
on the rich heritage of Hispanic and Native American cultures that are distinctive to the
New Mexico and particularly Northern New Mexico.

WHAT WILL BE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT ENACTING THIS BILL
If this bill is not enacted then the citizens of New Mexico, visitors, and its representatives will
not recognize the history of this institution and its dedication to providing innumerable
opportunities in educational advancement and professional development for New Mexicans
including former alumni, current students, the Hispanic population, Native American population,
students from Northern New Mexico, and all other students.
