SUMMARY
Synopsis of Joint Memorial
Senate Joint Memorial 36 contains no appropriation. Enactment of the legislation would place
an historic roadside marker on U.S. 84/285 between Pojoaque and Espanola to commemorate the
battle of Puertecito de Pojoaque; an historic Rio Arriba rebellion attempt against Mexican
government and local militia troops in 1838.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The cost of fabricating and installing a marker is estimated at $5,000. Because the memorial
contains no funding, it is expected that the historic marker fabrication and installation costs
would be funded under NMDOT District 5’s annual sign maintenance budget. Funding for this
proposed new marker would compete with existing official Historic Markers that require
replacement and/or maintenance.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
The draft marker text specified in this joint memorial would be reviewed by the Historic
Preservation Division staff and the Cultural Properties Review Committee for historical accuracy
and conformance to marker legend standard.
