A MEMORIAL

CELEBRATING FAMILIES AND DECLARING THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11,

2010, AS "NEW MEXICO FAMILY AND PARENT INVOLVEMENT DAY" IN

THE SENATE.

 

     WHEREAS, families and parents are the first teachers of

young children, and they serve as support for their

children's future success; and

     WHEREAS, according to a study conducted by the Harvard

family research project, parental involvement is associated

with higher student achievement outcomes; and

     WHEREAS, parents advocate for their children's learning

and health by caring for them and nurturing them so as to

build upon their innate strengths; and

     WHEREAS, the success of New Mexico's children depends

upon schools, health care providers, families and communities

working together; and

     WHEREAS, respect for the language, culture,

individuality and personal circumstances of families is vital

in engaging families as valued partners in efforts to promote

school success for children; and

     WHEREAS, acknowledging the strengths, capabilities,

contributions and interests of all families and parents is

critical to creating family-friendly environments in which

children can grow and thrive;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE

STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it celebrate New Mexico families and

declare Thursday, February 11, 2010, as "New Mexico Family and

Parent Involvement Day" in the senate.
