A MEMORIAL

EXPRESSING SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF CIUDAD JUAREZ.

     WHEREAS, the people of New Mexico have been saddened by the growing wave of violence that has afflicted our sister city of Ciudad Juarez during the past two years; and

     WHEREAS, this violence is in stark contrast with positive news we have received from our neighbors to the south, indicating exemplary regional leadership in such activities as the rapid expansion of business in San Jeronimo and the completion of the excellent highway between Ciudad Juarez and San Jeronimo; and

     WHEREAS, recently we have been moved by the tragic and senseless deaths of the youths assassinated and others injured while celebrating a birthday party in Villas de Salvárcar;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that our deepest sympathies and condolences be extended to the families of the victims of this recent tragedy, and to the families of other victims of violence in Ciudad Juarez, and that our most heartfelt hope be extended for a speedy end to this lengthening parenthesis of sorrow in our sister city; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we express our solidarity with the people of Ciudad Juarez and that the thoughts and prayers of all New Mexicans are with them; and                          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be published as an open letter in Diario de Juarez and Periodico Norte, Juarez, and copies of this memorial be transmitted to the mayor of Juarez, Jose Reyes Ferriz, the governor of the state of Chihuahua, Jose Reyes Baeza, and the legislature of the state of Chihuahua.
