AN ACT

RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION; TEMPORARILY SUSPENDING CERTAIN GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS DURING THE PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT'S TRANSITION TO ASSESSMENTS ALIGNED TO COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. TEMPORARILY SUSPENDING CERTAIN GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.--

          A. The purpose of this section is to provide flexibility to school districts by postponing implementation of certain graduation requirements during the public education department's period of transition to assessments aligned to the department's adoption of common core state standards.

          B. The provisions of Section 22-13-1.1 NMSA 1978 notwithstanding, a student who has completed the course requirements for high school graduation in the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years may graduate without demonstrating competence in required subject areas on the standards-based assessment or assessments or a portfolio of standards-based indicators established by the public education department by rule that shall remain in place until the department adopts assessments aligned to the common core state standards.
