A MEMORIAL

DECLARING JANUARY 30, 2012 "PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS DAY" IN THE SENATE AND RECOGNIZING THE PANCREATIC CANCER ACTION NETWORK FOR ITS ADVOCACY TO ADVANCE RESEARCH, SUPPORT PATIENTS AND CREATE HOPE FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY PANCREATIC CANCER.

 

     WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the nation's fourth leading cause of cancer-related death and presents a major threat to the nation's health; and

     WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is the only cancer among the top ten fatal cancers in the United States with a five-year survival rate in the single digits; and

     WHEREAS, the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer has not changed significantly in forty years; and

     WHEREAS, there are no reliable early detection methods and very few effective treatment options for pancreatic cancer; and

     WHEREAS, there is insufficient funding of pancreatic cancer research; and

     WHEREAS, there is no dedicated national research strategy to build the scientific knowledge and collaboration necessary to speed progress in the detection and treatment of pancreatic cancer; and

     WHEREAS, a sustained commitment of private investment in research and life-saving government investment in a dedicated national strategy to better diagnose, treat and cure pancreatic cancer is needed; and

     WHEREAS, there is a need for increased patient participation in clinical trials in order to advance research and make progress in pancreatic cancer treatment; and

     WHEREAS, it is essential for those facing a pancreatic cancer diagnosis to consider clinical trials when exploring treatment options; and

     WHEREAS, the pancreatic cancer action network is a nationwide network of people dedicated to working together to advance research, support patients and create hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer; and

     WHEREAS, the pancreatic cancer action network's vision is to double the pancreatic cancer survival rate by 2020; and

     WHEREAS, November is "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" and January 2012 has been designated "Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Trials Awareness Month";

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that January 30, 2012 be declared "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the senate recognize the pancreatic cancer action network for its diligent efforts in service of those with pancreatic cancer and their families; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the pancreatic cancer action network.
