A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION-NEW MEXICO, WHICH CELEBRATED ITS ONE-HUNDRED-TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY IN 2011.

 

     WHEREAS, Article 12, Section 1 of the constitution of New Mexico guarantees a uniform system of free public schools sufficient for the education of all children of school age in the state; and

     WHEREAS, the national education association-New Mexico was founded as the territorial education association in 1886 on the principle that the advancement of educational interests at the state and community levels is best achieved through regular, organized efforts; and

     WHEREAS, the association is composed of more than eight thousand members across the state; and

     WHEREAS, the association advocates for better learning conditions for public school children; and

     WHEREAS, the association helped to develop the state's equitable school funding system; and

     WHEREAS, the association continues to advocate for the adequate funding of public schools; and

     WHEREAS, the association advocates for better working conditions for public school employees; and

     WHEREAS, the association was responsible for establishing a retirement system for public school employees in the mid-twentieth century; and

     WHEREAS, the association promoted the creation of a statewide health insurance system for public school employees and retirees; and

     WHEREAS, the association advocates for teachers' rights, including the constitutional right to due process;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the national education association-New Mexico be recognized for its one hundred twenty-five years of contributions to state public schools, employees and students; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the national education association-New Mexico.
