A JOINT RESOLUTION

PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO ARTICLE 7 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF NEW MEXICO TO ALLOW VOTERS WHO ARE UNAFFILIATED WITH A POLITICAL PARTY TO PARTICIPATE IN STATE-SPONSORED PRIMARY ELECTIONS.

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. It is proposed to amend Article 7 of the constitution of New Mexico by adding a new section to read:

     "If public money is used to conduct a primary election, the state shall conduct the election. The state-sponsored primary election shall allow registered qualified electors who are unaffiliated with a political party to vote for candidates for any one political party of the voter's choice if the political party has chosen to participate in the state-sponsored primary election."

     SECTION 2. The amendment proposed by this resolution shall be submitted to the people for their approval or rejection at the next general election or at any special election prior to that date that may be called for that purpose.
