AN ACT

RELATING TO MOTOR VEHICLES; CREATING A SPECIAL REGISTRATION PLATE THAT REFLECTS SUPPORT FOR THE NEW MEXICO SHERIFF AND POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE; PROVIDING FUNDING FOR RECREATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND EQUIPMENT FOR AT-RISK CHILDREN IN NEW MEXICO; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. A new section of the Motor Vehicle Code is enacted to read:

     "[NEW MATERIAL] SPECIAL REGISTRATION PLATE FOR SUPPORTERS OF THE NEW MEXICO SHERIFF AND POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE.--

          A. The department shall issue a standardized special registration plate with a logo designed in accordance with Subsection C of Section 66-3-424 NMSA 1978 that indicates that the owner of a vehicle is a supporter of the New Mexico sheriff and police athletic league.

          B. For a fee of thirty-five dollars ($35.00), which is in addition to the regular motor vehicle registration fee, the owner of a vehicle may apply for issuance of a special New Mexico sheriff and police athletic league supporter registration plate. The owner shall apply for the special registration plate and pay the fee each year to retain and renew the special registration plate.

          C. The revenue from the additional fee for the special New Mexico sheriff and police athletic league supporter registration plate shall be distributed as follows:

                (1) ten dollars ($10.00) of the additional fee shall be retained by and is appropriated to the department to defray the cost of making and issuing the special New Mexico sheriff and police athletic league supporter registration plate; and

                (2) twenty-five dollars ($25.00) of the additional fee collected shall be distributed to and is appropriated to the children, youth and families department for the purpose of funding recreational and educational programs and equipment for at-risk children in New Mexico."

     SECTION 2. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the provisions of this act is July 1, 2013.
