A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 6, 2016 "FIRST SERVE-NEW MEXICO DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, New Mexico's schoolchildren benefit from after-school programs that provide academic and athletic instruction; and

     WHEREAS, since its founding in 2003, First Serve-New Mexico has been impacting the lives of students in grades three through twelve, using individualized mentoring, specialized academic tutoring, a life-skills curriculum and rigorous tennis instruction in a team format; and

     WHEREAS, First Serve-New Mexico currently operates its after-school program in six Santa Fe schools with approximately one hundred participating and dedicated students; and

     WHEREAS, First Serve-New Mexico provides year-round instruction at no charge to participants; and

     WHEREAS, First Serve-New Mexico's after-school program is a structured, four-day-a-week, year-round program staffed by highly qualified professionals in the fields of education and tennis instruction; and

     WHEREAS, while some students participate for only one academic year, many students return for a second or third year; and

     WHEREAS, during the summer months the students of First Serve-New Mexico participate in many statewide tournaments; and

     WHEREAS, the consistency of the program, the creation of positive peer groups and the accountability to the progress of each student all result in measurable success toward high school graduation, college admission and the knowledge of which career to pursue;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 6, 2016 be declared "First Serve-New Mexico Day" in the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that recognition be extended to the tutors and instructors of First Serve-New Mexico for their valuable service; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the board chair of First Serve-New Mexico.
