0012|     RELATING TO LAW ENFORCEMENT; REQUIRING LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS

0013|     TO RECEIVE INSTRUCTION IN RECOGNIZING OFFENDERS WHO MAY HAVE A

0014|     MENTAL ILLNESS; ENACTING A SECTION OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT

0017|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0018|       Section 1.  A new section of the Law Enforcement Training
    |
0019|     Act is enacted to read:
    |
0020|       "[NEW MATERIAL] INSTRUCTIONAL COMPONENT--RECOGNITION OF
    |
0021|     MENTAL ILLNESS.--
    |
0022|            A.  The New Mexico law enforcement academy board
    |
0023|     shall establish and include in all basic law enforcement
    |
0024|     training and in all in-service law enforcement training an
    |
0025|     instructional component on encountering alleged offenders or
    |
0001|     persons in the community who may have a mental illness.
    |
0002|            B.  The instructional component shall include:
    |
0003|                 (1)  recognizing behaviors that may indicate
    |
0004|     that a person may be suffering from a mental illness;
    |
0005|                 (2)  effective methods of communicating with a
    |
0006|     person who may be suffering from a mental illness; and
    |
0007|                 (3)  incarceration options or other available
    |
0008|     options in communities statewide for a person who may be
    |
0009|     suffering from a mental illness."
