0012|     MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO IMPLEMENT A MERIT PAY SYSTEM IN THE

0013|     PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

0015|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0016|       Section 1.  APPROPRIATION.--Twenty-three million dollars
    |
0017|     ($23,000,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state
    |
0018|     department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year
    |
0019|     1997 for the purpose of making distributions to local school
    |
0020|     districts implementing merit pay plans approved by the state
    |
0021|     department of public education.  The state department of public
    |
0022|     education may approve and shall provide for the proportionate
    |
0023|     distribution of funds to local school districts that have
    |
0024|     established approved merit pay plans to provide additional
    |
0025|     compensation to not more than twenty-five percent of the
    |
0001|     certified classroom teachers in the local school district.  Any
    |
0002|     unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of
    |
0003|     fiscal year 1997 shall revert to the general fund.
