0012|     PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 12 THROUGH 18, 1996 AS "RANDOM ACTS OF
    |
0013|     KINDNESS WEEK" IN NEW MEXICO.

0015|       WHEREAS, on the three-year anniversary of the publication
    |
0016|     of the book "Random Acts of Kindness", the nation will celebrate
    |
0017|     national random acts of kindness week; and
    |
0018|       WHEREAS, the rise in popularity of the idea of random acts
    |
0019|     of kindness has spread from the book to bumperstickers, buttons,
    |
0020|     national coverage on talk shows, radio shows and newspaper
    |
0021|     stories to the inception of a random acts of kindness week
    |
0022|     nationwide; and
    |
0023|       WHEREAS, the idea behind random acts of kindness week is
    |
0024|     simply to encourage people everywhere to take a few minutes from
    |
0025|     their daily lives and act with caring and compassion toward a
    |
0001|     stranger in some small way which may in turn inspire that person
    |
0002|     to act with kindness toward yet another stranger, through
    |
0003|     selfless acts such as putting coins in another person's expired
    |
0004|     parking meter, helping a busy mother or an elderly person carry
    |
0005|     groceries to their car, taking home-baked cookies to a
    |
0006|     retirement home or innumerable other acts that are done simply
    |
0007|     out of kindness toward other human beings in general and without
    |
0008|     regard for personal gain; and
    |
0009|       WHEREAS, teachers should also promote random acts of
    |
0010|     kindness week, by encouraging schoolchildren to participate in
    |
0011|     random acts of kindness by taking time out of recess to help
    |
0012|     clean up the playground, inviting a new student to share their
    |
0013|     lunches, holding a canned food drive or simply encouraging
    |
0014|     others around them to commit one random act of kindness each
    |
0015|     day;
    |
0016|       NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0017|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 12 through 18, 1996 be
    |
0018|     proclaimed as "random acts of kindness week" and encourage all
    |
0019|     New Mexicans to treat one another with compassion and caring, as
    |
0020|     well as encourage schoolchildren to participate in all manner of
    |
0021|     random acts of kindness; and
    |
0022|       BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be sent
    |
0023|     to the speaker of the house of representatives, the president
    |
0024|     pro tempore of the senate, the superintendent of public
    |
0025|     instruction and the governor.
