0012| REQUESTING THE STATE CORPORATION COMMISSION, IN COOPERATION WITH
|
0013| THE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION AND THE DEPARTMENT
|
0014| OF PUBLIC SAFETY, TO STUDY THE MECHANISM FOR THE DISTRIBUTION TO
|
0015| LOCAL FIREFIGHTERS FROM THE FIRE PROTECTION FUND AND TO
|
0016| RECOMMEND CHANGES TO THE APPROPRIATE INTERIM COMMITTEE.

0018| WHEREAS, New Mexico is one of the largest states in the
|
0019| union with a relatively small population that is sparsely
|
0020| settled; and
|
0021| WHEREAS, ninety percent of the state is protected from fire
|
0022| by volunteer firefighters who must cover very large areas; and
|
0023| WHEREAS, financial resources to provide adequate
|
0024| firefighting equipment are provided through the fire protection
|
0025| fund; and
|
0001| WHEREAS, there are always more needs than the fire
|
0002| protection fund has resources to meet; and
|
0003| WHEREAS, many fire district commissioners feel that the
|
0004| procedures for obtaining money from the fire protection fund are
|
0005| cumbersome and unnecessary;
|
0006| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0007| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state corporation commission, in
|
0008| cooperation with the local government division of the department
|
0009| of finance and administration and the department of public
|
0010| safety, be requested to study the mechanism for the distribution
|
0011| to local firefighters from the fire protection fund and to
|
0012| recommend changes to the appropriate interim committee appointed
|
0013| by the legislative council; and
|
0014| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the report be presented to the
|
0015| appropriate interim legislative committee by December 1, 1996;
|
0016| and
|
0017| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0018| transmitted to the state corporation commission and to the
|
0019| secretary of finance and administration and the secretary of
|
0020| public safety.
