0012| REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF GAME AND FISH TO WORK WITH THE NEW

0013| MEXICO CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO CONDUCT AN ELK HUNT TO

0014| CONTROL THE ELK POPULATION NEAR LOS ALAMOS.

0016| WHEREAS, the elk herd around Los Alamos has increased
|
0017| dramatically in recent years; and
|
0018| WHEREAS, the herd, due to its increased size, has caused
|
0019| damage to the historic Bandelier national monument, as well as a
|
0020| great deal of property damage to the property of the citizens of
|
0021| Los Alamos county by destroying trees and gardens, as well as
|
0022| causing automobile accidents; and
|
0023| WHEREAS, the department of game and fish is unable to
|
0024| control the elk herd's size, due to the proximity of the
|
0025| residents, the national park service and Los Alamos national
|
0001| laboratory;
|
0002| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0003| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of game and fish be
|
0004| requested to work with the New Mexico congressional delegation
|
0005| to obtain permission from the national park service and the Los
|
0006| Alamos national laboratory to conduct elk hunts on those
|
0007| properties; and
|
0008| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0009| transmitted to the director of game and fish, the New Mexico
|
0010| congressional delegation, the secretary of the United States
|
0011| department of the interior and the secretary of the United
|
0012| States department of energy.
