0001| HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL 67 | 0002| 42ND LEGISLATURE - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - SECOND SESSION, | 0003| 1996 | 0004| INTRODUCED BY | 0005| BEN LUJAN | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| | 0011| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0012| RECOGNIZING THE ONE HUNDRED FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE | 0013| ESTABLISHMENT OF FORT MARCY AS AN IMPORTANT AND HISTORIC | 0014| LANDMARK IN SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO. | 0015| | 0016| WHEREAS, the present site of Fort Marcy was first selected | 0017| and used by surrounding pueblo Indian chiefs as a headquarters | 0018| for the revolt of 1680; and | 0019| WHEREAS, in April 1846, an unsettled dispute between the | 0020| United States and Mexico over territorial boundaries lent itself | 0021| to the Mexican-American War; and | 0022| WHEREAS, under the direction of President James R. Polk, | 0023| General Stephan Watts Kearney was directed to establish military | 0024| headquarters in Santa Fe to carry out the occupation of the | 0025| disputed lands, and the headquarters was named Fort William | 0001| Marcy in honor of the secretary of war; and | 0002| WHEREAS, in 1848, the land dispute was settled under the | 0003| provisions of the Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo between Mexico | 0004| and the United States, wherein the boundaries were established | 0005| and a cash settlement was made to Mexico; and | 0006| WHEREAS, the disputed land remained under the command of | 0007| the United States military until the territory of New Mexico was | 0008| established in 1850, and the soldiers remained at Fort Marcy | 0009| until the fort was deactivated in 1894; | 0010| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF | 0011| REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it request and | 0012| encourage all local governments, civic, fraternal, social, | 0013| religious, philanthropic groups, youth groups, older Americans, | 0014| private and public schools and, especially, veterans' | 0015| organizations to join together and donate their resources and | 0016| energy to preserve and restore Fort Marcy to reflect its | 0017| important part in our rich history; and | 0018| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state of New Mexico proudly | 0019| recognize the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of Fort Marcy; | 0020| and | 0021| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the governor of the great state | 0022| of New Mexico declare by proclamation that September 16, 1996 is | 0023| designated "Fort Marcy Day" in New Mexico; and | 0024| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be | 0025| transmitted to the governor and to the city manager of Santa Fe. | 0001|  |
