0001| HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL 78 | 0002| 42ND LEGISLATURE - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - SECOND SESSION, | 0003| 1996 | 0004| INTRODUCED BY | 0005| WALLACE CHARLEY | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| | 0011| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0012| REQUESTING THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TO FUND | 0013| CONSTRUCTION OF AN APPROPRIATE COLLEGE CAMPUS FOR THE NAVAJO | 0014| COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN SHIPROCK IN SAN JUAN COUNTY. | 0015| | 0016| WHEREAS, the Navajo community college in Shiprock consists | 0017| of one 1952 barracks building and several trailers and portable | 0018| classrooms; and | 0019| WHEREAS, this meager facility is woefully inadequate to | 0020| house modern college curriculum offerings; and | 0021| WHEREAS, faculty members must commute from Farmington, New | 0022| Mexico and Cortez, Colorado due to the inadequate facilities on | 0023| the Shiprock campus; and | 0024| WHEREAS, the current enrollment of approximately five | 0025| hundred is expected to more than double when the campus is | 0001| expanded; and | 0002| WHEREAS, the college-age community of the eastern Navajo | 0003| agency has expressed an interest in learning various health-related professions, which education cannot be provided in | 0004| existing facilities; and | 0005| WHEREAS, the Shiprock campus of the Navajo community | 0006| college desperately needs adequate facilities for classrooms, | 0007| laboratories, faculty and administrative offices and a gymnasium | 0008| and auditorium; and | 0009| WHEREAS, the Navajo community college in Shiprock has had | 0010| land for a full college campus withdrawn from the tribe's trust | 0011| lands; and | 0012| WHEREAS, the Navajo community college has no funds for | 0013| additional construction or teaching equipment or faculty | 0014| salaries; | 0015| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0016| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the congress of the United States be | 0017| requested to appropriate a minimum of thirty-five million | 0018| dollars ($35,000,000) for archaeological surveys, environmental | 0019| assessments, planning, designing, constructing or equipping a | 0020| full campus for the Navajo community college in Shiprock located | 0021| in San Juan county; and | 0022| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be sent | 0023| to every member of New Mexico's congressional delegation. | 0024|  State of New Mexico | 0025| House of Representatives | 0001| | 0002| FORTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE | 0003| SECOND SESSION, 1996 | 0004| | 0005| | 0006| February 14, 1996 | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| Mr. Speaker: | 0010| | 0011| Your EDUCATION COMMITTEE, to whom has been referred | 0012| | 0013| HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL 78 | 0014| | 0015| has had it under consideration and reports same with | 0016| recommendation that it DO PASS. | 0017| | 0018| Respectfully submitted, | 0019| | 0020| | 0021| | 0022| | 0023| Samuel F.
