WILLIAMS | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| | 0011| A MEMORIAL | 0012| HONORING THE LIFE OF CONGRESSWOMAN BARBARA JORDAN, ACKNOWLEDGING | 0013| HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND MOURNING HER PASSING. | 0014| | 0015| WHEREAS, Barbara Jordan was raised in an impoverished area | 0016| of downtown Houston, the daughter of a Baptist minister; and | 0017| WHEREAS, she studied political science and history at the | 0018| then all-Black Texas southern university in Houston and, after | 0019| graduating, attended and graduated from Boston university law | 0020| school in 1959; and | 0021| WHEREAS, in 1966, Barbara Jordan was the first Black woman | 0022| elected to the Texas legislature, and in 1972, she went on to | 0023| win a seat in the United States congress; and | 0024| WHEREAS, during her six years in congress, Ms. Jordan | 0025| distinguished herself as an articulate and well-informed | 0001| speaker, an arch defender of the United States constitution and | 0002| a calm voice in a tumultuous time; and | 0003| WHEREAS, upon her retirement from congress, Ms. Jordan | 0004| joined the staff of Lyndon B. Johnson school of public affairs | 0005| at the university of Texas, where she taught political ethics | 0006| and was a recognized scholar in constitutional law; and | 0007| WHEREAS, during her lifetime, Barbara Jordan overcame | 0008| poverty and prejudice to become a crusader for truth and a | 0009| champion of justice; and | 0010| WHEREAS, she overcame numerous physical obstacles, | 0011| including multiple sclerosis, leukemia and diabetes; and | 0012| WHEREAS, Barbara Jordan will long be remembered for her | 0013| eloquent speeches and her strict concept of public officials and | 0014| public trust; | 0015| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF | 0016| REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the life of | 0017| Congresswoman Barbara Jordan be honored, her accomplishments | 0018| acknowledged and her passing mourned; and | 0019| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all members of elected bodies | 0020| remember and abide by the principles of public trust and | 0021| dedication epitomized by the life of Congresswoman Barbara | 0022| Jordan. | 0023|  |
