"MEL" | 0014| ARAGON. | 0015| | 0016| WHEREAS, Manuel C. Aragon, "Mel", Manny Aragon's father and | 0017| a former Albuquerque city council member, passed away on January | 0018| 4; and | 0019| WHEREAS, Mel was active locally in politics and civic | 0020| affairs for many years and acted as a mentor for many, | 0021| personally and politically; and | 0022| WHEREAS, Mel was an advocate for the poor and an outspoken | 0023| crusader against pornography; and | 0024| WHEREAS, he was a veteran of World War II, served as a | 0025| Bernalillo democratic party precinct chair and served on the | 0001| executive committee. He was a delegate to the 1969 | 0002| constitutional convention and a member of many civic | 0003| organizations, including the model cities board and the flood | 0004| control board; and | 0005| WHEREAS, Mel didn't just serve as a member of a board, he | 0006| dove into the problems his neighbors experienced, helping rescue | 0007| victims of the floods in the early 1960s, for examples, or | 0008| pitching in with his own hands to build the east San Jose | 0009| community center and other community centers; and | 0010| WHEREAS, Mel loved people, believed in their goodness and | 0011| showed compassion, generosity and humility throughout his | 0012| illustrious career; | 0013| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0014| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Mel be remembered in appreciation of | 0015| his contribution to Albuquerque, the state and the lives of all | 0016| who knew him; and | 0017| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the condolences of the | 0018| legislature be extended to Manny, Charlotte, Richard, Charles | 0019| and the extended family of Manuel C. Aragon; and | 0020| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be | 0021| transmitted to his family. | 0022|  | 0023| |
