0013|     REQUESTING THE COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION TO STUDY THE NEED

0014|     FOR A PROGRAM FOR DEAF STUDENTS WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS.

0016|       WHEREAS, a certain segment of the deaf community has
    |
0017|     serious mental health problems that may or may not be related to
    |
0018|     their deafness; and
    |
0019|       WHEREAS, no specific program addresses the problems of
    |
0020|     these individuals; and 
    |
0021|       WHEREAS, the New Mexico school for the deaf, with its long
    |
0022|     history of serving the deaf community, has demonstrated a
    |
0023|     willingness to provide such a program in its well-structured
    |
0024|     environment; and
    |
0025|       WHEREAS, a funding request for such a program was presented
    |
0001|     to the commission on higher education; and
    |
0002|       WHEREAS, with the limited state revenue this year the
    |
0003|     request was not presented to the legislature;
    |
0004|       NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0005|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the commission on higher education be
    |
0006|     requested to study the advisability of establishing a program on
    |
0007|     the campus of the New Mexico school for the deaf to offer
    |
0008|     residential treatment to deaf students with mental health
    |
0009|     problems; and
    |
0010|       BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be sent
    |
0011|     to the New Mexico school for the deaf and to the commission on
    |
0012|     higher education.
