0001| HOUSE MEMORIAL 1 | 0002| 42ND LEGISLATURE - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - FIRST SESSION, 1995 | 0003| INTRODUCED BY | 0004| VINCE MARTINEZ | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A MEMORIAL | 0011| RECOGNIZING LOCAL LUPUS SUPPORT GROUPS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO | 0012| PROVIDE SUPPORT SERVICES TO INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH LUPUS, TO | 0013| EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT LUPUS AND TO SUPPORT RESEARCH INTO THE | 0014| CAUSE AND CURE OF LUPUS. | 0015| | 0016| WHEREAS, it is estimated that five hundred thousand | 0017| Americans have been diagnosed with lupus; and | 0018| WHEREAS, lupus can occur at any age, and in either sex, | 0019| although it occurs ten to fifteen times more frequently among | 0020| adult females than in males; and | 0021| WHEREAS, lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that loses | 0022| its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances | 0023| and its own cells and tissues; and | 0024| WHEREAS, many lupus symptoms mimic those of other illnesses | 0025| and are sometimes vague, therefore making it difficult to | 0001| diagnose; and | 0002| WHEREAS, currently, there is no single laboratory test that | 0003| can determine whether a person has lupus or not; and | 0004| WHEREAS, in order to assist a physician in the diagnosis of | 0005| lupus, the American rheumatism association issued a list of | 0006| symptoms or signs that help distinguish lupus from other | 0007| diseases; and | 0008| WHEREAS, early treatment may decrease the chance of | 0009| permanent tissue or organ damage and reduce the time one must | 0010| remain on high doses of drugs; and | 0011| WHEREAS, the progress made in treatment and diagnosis | 0012| during the last decade has been greater than that made over the | 0013| past one hundred years; and | 0014| WHEREAS, it can be said that eighty to ninety percent of | 0015| people with lupus are much better today and deaths from lupus | 0016| are very uncommon; | 0017| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF | 0018| REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislature | 0019| provide support to the New Mexico medical society and local | 0020| lupus support groups in their patient education and prevention | 0021| programs, public awareness activities and advocacy for the | 0022| disease; and | 0023| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be sent | 0024| to the New Mexico medical society. | 0025| - - | 0001| | 0002| | 0003| | 0004| | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| | 0011| | 0012| | 0013| | 0014| | 0015| | 0016| | 0017| | 0018| | 0019| | 0020| | 0021| | 0022| | 0023| | 0024| | 0025| | 0001| | 0002| | 0003| |
