0011|     MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO SUPPORT PUBLIC SERVICE LEARNING

0012|     INITIATIVES.

0014|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0015|          Section 1.  APPROPRIATION.--Sixty thousand dollars
    |
0016|     ($60,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state
    |
0017|     department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year
    |
0018|     1998 for the purpose of coordinating, supporting and monitoring
    |
0019|     public service learning opportunities and activities in the
    |
0020|     public schools to enable young people to make significant
    |
0021|     contributions to the welfare of the community by participating
    |
0022|     in community-based organizations and individual initiatives. 
    |
0023|     All students, including students with disabilities, must be
    |
0024|     afforded public service learning opportunities.  The state
    |
0025|     department of public education shall collaborate with the
    |
0001|     commission on higher education to ensure involvement of post-
    |
0002|     secondary institutions and with the New Mexico commission for
    |
0003|     national and community service to ensure coordination and use 
    |
0004|     of federal Community Services Act of 1974 funds.  Any
    |
0005|     unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of
    |
0006|     fiscal year 1998 shall revert to the general fund.
