0011|     MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR A NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT RETENTION

0012|     PROJECT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO.

0014|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0015|          Section 1.  APPROPRIATION.--Two hundred fifty thousand
    |
0016|     dollars ($250,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the
    |
0017|     New Mexico office of Indian affairs for expenditure in fiscal
    |
0018|     year 1998 for the purpose of establishing a Native American
    |
0019|     retention project that includes student identification and
    |
0020|     recruitment, a summer college preparation program, senior year
    |
0021|     involvement, orientation, a summer bridge program and a
    |
0022|     documentation and evaluation study.  The hiring of necessary
    |
0023|     support staff, including a graduate assistant and peer mentors,
    |
0024|     is also included in the project.  Fifty thousand dollars
    |
0025|     ($50,000) of this appropriation shall be expended for internet
    |
0001|     access and other technological enhancements needed for program
    |
0002|     support.  Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at
    |
0003|     the end of fiscal year 1998 shall revert to the general fund.
