0011|     REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR AND THE NEW MEXICO STATE DEPARTMENT OF
    |
0012|     PUBLIC EDUCATION TO ENDORSE MEANS AND METHODS OF IMPROVING THE
    |
0013|     TEACHING OF NATURAL RESOURCE, ENVIRONMENTAL AND AGRICULTURAL
    |
0014|     EDUCATION IN NEW MEXICO CLASSROOMS AND RECOGNIZING THE
    |
0015|     IMPORTANCE OF A PRIVATELY FUNDED EFFORT.
    |

    |
0017|          WHEREAS, New Mexico is a rural state that possesses great
    |
0018|     natural resources and is a major producer of a wide variety of
    |
0019|     agricultural products and services; and
    |
0020|          WHEREAS, many New Mexico students and teachers are
    |
0021|     becoming removed from an understanding of the basics of water
    |
0022|     resources and land preservation in an arid environment and are
    |
0023|     losing sight of the importance of natural resources in the
    |
0024|     state's economy and culture; and
    |
0025|          WHEREAS, there is a great need for the creation of an
    |
0001|     environmental and agricultural curriculum and associated
    |
0002|     resource library for New Mexico students and teachers; and
    |
0003|          WHEREAS, the New Mexico farm and livestock bureau, the
    |
0004|     state's largest and oldest private agricultural organization,
    |
0005|     is currently committing funding, staff and resources to such a
    |
0006|     statewide education program to the benefit of all New Mexicans;
    |
0007|     and
    |
0008|          WHEREAS, the New Mexico farm and livestock bureau is also
    |
0009|     funding a statewide environmental camp and providing
    |
0010|     scholarships for all its participants;
    |
0011|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0012|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor and the state department
    |
0013|     of public education be urged to endorse the efforts of the
    |
0014|     numerous organizations involved in a program to expand and
    |
0015|     improve on natural resource, environmental and agricultural
    |
0016|     education in New Mexico public schools.
    |
0017|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the governor and the state
    |
0018|     department of public education be urged to provide assistance
    |
0019|     where needed from the department of agriculture, the natural
    |
0020|     resources conservation service, the state land office, the
    |
0021|     water resources institute, the New Mexico state university
    |
0022|     college of agriculture and home economics, the cooperative
    |
0023|     extension service or other appropriate state agencies in an
    |
0024|     effort to improve educational opportunities for New Mexico
    |
0025|     students and teachers.

0001|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0002|     transmitted to the governor, the superintendent of public
    |
0003|     instruction, the director of the department of agriculture and
    |
0004|     to the other state agencies listed herein.
