KNOWLES | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| FOR THE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENERGY AND DEFENSE CONVERSION | 0008| COMMITTEE | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| REQUESTING THE COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION TO WORK WITH THE | 0012| BUSINESS AND RESEARCH COMMUNITIES AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES TO | 0013| DEVELOP A PLAN TO STRENGTHEN THE SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS | 0014| CURRICULA OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND TO ENHANCE THE SKILLS OF | 0015| THE ENTRY-LEVEL WORK FORCE IN THOSE CRITICAL AREAS. | 0016| | 0017| WHEREAS, New Mexico is home to a vast array of high | 0018| technology research facilities, including the Sandia, Los | 0019| Alamos and Phillips national laboratories, the very large array | 0020| in Socorro county, the Sunspot observatory and the White Sands | 0021| missile range; and | 0022| WHEREAS, New Mexico has attracted many high technology | 0023| firms that are on the cutting edge of research and | 0024| manufacturing in physics, computer technology, aerospace and | 0025| astrophysics; and | 0001| WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of New Mexico, both | 0002| from an economic development and employment perspective, to | 0003| provide educational resources that thoroughly prepare the | 0004| state's entry-level work force to take advantage of job | 0005| opportunities in the high technology sector; and | 0006| WHEREAS, New Mexico's community college system is an | 0007| excellent means for students to quickly and inexpensively | 0008| acquire the skills they will need to compete in the high | 0009| technology marketplace; | 0010| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0011| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the commission on higher education be | 0012| requested to work with representatives of the business and | 0013| research communities and representatives of the state's | 0014| community colleges in developing a plan to strengthen the | 0015| science and mathematics components of the state's community | 0016| colleges; and | 0017| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the commission on higher | 0018| education report to the appropriate interim legislative | 0019| committee by November 1, 1997 regarding the commission's | 0020| progress on the plan; and | 0021| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be | 0022| transmitted to the commission on higher education, to each | 0023| community college board, to the Sandia, Los Alamos and Phillips | 0024| national laboratories and to the association of commerce and | 0025| industry. | 0001| - 2 - State of New Mexico | 0002| House of Representatives | 0003| | 0004| FORTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE | 0005| FIRST SESSION, 1997 | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| February 21, 1997 | 0009| | 0010| | 0011| Mr. Speaker: | 0012| | 0013| Your EDUCATION COMMITTEE, to whom has been referred | 0014| | 0015| HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL 9 | 0016| | 0017| has had it under consideration and reports same with | 0018| recommendation that it DO PASS, and thence referred to the | 0019| APPROPRIATIONS AND FINANCE COMMITTEE. | 0020| | 0021| Respectfully submitted, | 0022| | 0023| | 0024| | 0025| | 0001| | 0002| Samuel F.
