0011|     PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 10 THROUGH 16, 1997 AS "RANDOM ACTS OF
    |
0012|     KINDNESS WEEK" IN NEW MEXICO.

0014|          WHEREAS, on the fourth anniversary of the publication of
    |
0015|     the book "Random Acts of Kindness", the nation will celebrate
    |
0016|     international random acts of kindness week; and
    |
0017|          WHEREAS, the rise in popularity of the idea of random acts
    |
0018|     of kindness has spread from the book to bumper stickers,
    |
0019|     buttons, national coverage on talk shows, radio shows and
    |
0020|     newspaper stories to the inception of a random acts of kindness
    |
0021|     week nationwide; and
    |
0022|          WHEREAS, the idea behind random acts of kindness week is
    |
0023|     simply to encourage people everywhere to take a few minutes
    |
0024|     from their daily lives to act with caring and compassion toward
    |
0025|     a stranger in some small way, which may in turn inspire that
    |
0001|     person to act with kindness toward yet another stranger,
    |
0002|     through selfless acts such as putting coins in another person's
    |
0003|     expired parking meter, helping a busy mother or an elderly
    |
0004|     person carry groceries to his car, taking home-baked cookies to
    |
0005|     a retirement home or innumerable other acts that are done
    |
0006|     simply out of kindness toward other human beings in general and
    |
0007|     without regard for personal gain; and
    |
0008|          WHEREAS, teachers should also promote random acts of
    |
0009|     kindness week, by encouraging schoolchildren to participate in
    |
0010|     random acts of kindness by taking time out of recess to help
    |
0011|     clean up the playground, inviting a new student to share their
    |
0012|     lunches, holding a canned food drive or simply encouraging
    |
0013|     others around them to commit one random act of kindness each
    |
0014|     day;
    |
0015|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0016|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 10 through 16, 1997 be
    |
0017|     proclaimed as "random acts of kindness week" and encourage all
    |
0018|     New Mexicans to treat one another with compassion and caring,
    |
0019|     as well as encourage schoolchildren to participate in all
    |
0020|     manner of random acts of kindness; and
    |
0021|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0022|     sent to the speaker of the house of representatives, the
    |
0023|     president pro tempore of the senate, the superintendent of
    |
0024|     public instruction and the governor.
