0011|     REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR TO CREATE A COMMISSION TO ESTABLISH NEW
    |
0012|     VETERANS' CEMETERIES IN THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO.

0014|          WHEREAS, the national cemetery in Santa Fe is full; and
    |
0015|          WHEREAS, New Mexico has a large veteran population of over
    |
0016|     one hundred seventy thousand; and
    |
0017|          WHEREAS, it is incumbent on our society to honor and
    |
0018|     preserve customs that bind our people and thereby strengthen
    |
0019|     us; and
    |
0020|          WHEREAS, veterans of our armed services who fought in wars 
    |
0021|     for the preservation of our liberty, freedom and strength will
    |
0022|     follow the course of all living things and succumb to the
    |
0023|     inevitable peace of death; and
    |
0024|          WHEREAS, moral, health and legal necessities claim a final
    |
0025|     resting place for our warriors, a claim we all have on our
    |
0001|     fellows; and
    |
0002|          WHEREAS, there are several proposals currently being
    |
0003|     advanced to the legislative venue; and
    |
0004|          WHEREAS, it is incumbent that we move in a direction that
    |
0005|     will best serve the needs of the state for more than the short
    |
0006|     term;
    |
0007|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0008|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor be requested to create a
    |
0009|     commission to study the proposals and recommend the best plan
    |
0010|     to establish new veterans' cemeteries in New Mexico; and
    |
0011|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the commission be made up of
    |
0012|     two members of the house of representatives, two members of the
    |
0013|     senate, one member from the human services department and one
    |
0014|     member from each of the major veterans organizations in the
    |
0015|     state; and
    |
0016|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the commission complete its
    |
0017|     task by December 1, 1997 and report its progress to the
    |
0018|     appropriate interim committee of the legislature; and
    |
0019|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0020|     transmitted to the governor, the speaker of the house of
    |
0021|     representatives, the president pro tempore of the senate and
    |
0022|     the secretary of human services.
