MCSHERRY | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| REQUESTING THAT AN URBAN AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION PROGRAM BE | 0012| ESTABLISHED IN NEW MEXICO. | 0013| | 0014| WHEREAS, many urban youths have been categorized as at- | 0015| risk and in need of alternatives in education, career | 0016| development and work force training, counseling, career | 0017| guidance and positive experiences that build self-esteem and | 0018| self-confidence; and | 0019| WHEREAS, urban communities are a source for developing a | 0020| diverse and talented work force to enhance the economic and | 0021| employment base in New Mexico; and | 0022| WHEREAS, urban citizens need to receive education in and | 0023| about the agricultural industry, including food production, | 0024| processing and safety; natural resources and environmental | 0025| sciences; economic analyses and marketing of specialized goods | 0001| and services; and technology and management systems for a | 0002| competitive global economy and environment; and | 0003| WHEREAS, there exist in the United States a number of | 0004| exemplary programs of urban agricultural education that are | 0005| characterized by excellent technical education and | 0006| opportunities for leadership and personal development for | 0007| youths; and | 0008| WHEREAS, urban programs of agricultural education can | 0009| assist students in their career and leadership development and | 0010| can also serve to help the general public learn more about | 0011| agriculture and the huge impact this industry has on our | 0012| society; | 0013| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0014| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislature encourage and support | 0015| the development of urban agricultural education; and | 0016| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that business and industry, | 0017| educational institutions at all levels, community leaders, | 0018| professional organizations, farm and other agricultural policy- | 0019| making organizations and other public policy leaders be urged | 0020| to work together to foster the further development of urban | 0021| agricultural education programs; and | 0022| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, given that urban schools can | 0023| be a source for many excellent agricultural scientists and | 0024| agriculturalists of the future, attention be given to the | 0025| expansion of agricultural education programs at urban schools. | 0001| - 2 - State of New Mexico | 0002| House of Representatives | 0003| | 0004| FORTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE | 0005| FIRST SESSION, 1997 | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| February 27, 1997 | 0009| | 0010| | 0011| Mr. Speaker: | 0012| | 0013| Your AGRICULTURE AND WATER RESOURCES COMMITTEE, | 0014| to whom has been referred | 0015| | 0016| HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL 33 | 0017| | 0018| has had it under consideration and reports same with | 0019| recommendation that it DO PASS, amended as follows: | 0020| | 0021| 1.
