0011|     REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR TO PROCLAIM MARCH 31 AS CESAR CHAVEZ

    |
0014|          WHEREAS, Cesar E. Chavez was born on March 31, 1927 to
    |
0015|     Juana and Librado Chavez, a merchant, farmer and postmaster for
    |
0016|     a community near Yuma, Arizona; and
    |
0017|          WHEREAS, Cesar grew up during the depression and, like so
    |
0018|     many others in that period, experienced the hardships and
    |
0019|     heartaches of his family's loss of their farm and business; and
    |
0020|          WHEREAS, the Chavez family, as so many others, went to
    |
0021|     California as migrant farm workers; and
    |
0022|          WHEREAS, as a migrant farm worker, Cesar grew up under
    |
0023|     circumstances that made it hard to get an education, have a
    |
0024|     permanent home or achieve many of the components of the
    |
0025|     American dream; and
    |
0001|          WHEREAS, he decided to dedicate himself to helping his
    |
0002|     fellow farmworkers and became a spokesman for better working
    |
0003|     conditions, better pay and equal justice in the farm fields of
    |
0004|     America; and
    |
0005|          WHEREAS, he was instrumental in getting the united farm
    |
0006|     workers of America founded in 1962; and
    |
0007|          WHEREAS, he persevered through bitter confrontations,
    |
0008|     jailings and physical threats to his life and won many of the
    |
0009|     goals he had pursued for his fellow workers;
    |
0010|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0011|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor be requested to proclaim
    |
0012|     an annual day of commemoration, March 31, as Cesar Chavez day;
    |
0013|     and 
    |
0014|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0015|     transmitted to the governor and to Helen Fabela Chavez.
