0001| HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL 45 | 0002| 43rd legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - first session, 1997 | 0003| INTRODUCED BY | 0004| DANICE PICRAUX | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| REQUESTING NEW MEXICO STATE LAND OFFICE TO CONTINUE TO PARTNER | 0012| WITH PRIVATE, PUBLIC AND NONPROFIT ENTITIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF | 0013| FURTHERING THE STATUS OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN | 0014| KINDERGARTEN THROUGH TWELFTH GRADE IN NEW MEXICO. | 0015| | 0016| WHEREAS, New Mexico's abundant environmental resources | 0017| have prompted many New Mexico educators to develop and | 0018| incorporate environmental education projects in their course | 0019| curricula; and | 0020| WHEREAS, the state land office has a program offering | 0021| educational easements for schools to have the opportunity to | 0022| incorporate outdoor learning with their existing curricula; and | 0023| WHEREAS, the New Mexico state land office has completed | 0024| phase one of a statewide assessment of environmental education | 0025| in grades kindergarten through twelve; and | 0001| WHEREAS, the New Mexico state land office environmental | 0002| education advisory group was represented by the New Mexico | 0003| museum of natural history, the environmental education | 0004| association of New Mexico, the New Mexico oil and gas | 0005| association, the New Mexico department of agriculture, Rio | 0006| Grande nature park, the United States department of energy, the | 0007| northern New Mexico community college environmental student | 0008| association, the public service company of New Mexico, the New | 0009| Mexico mining association, BHP minerals, the state department | 0010| of public education, New Mexico's state engineer, Phelps Dodge, | 0011| Los Alamos national laboratory, the New Mexico farm and | 0012| livestock bureau and the New Mexico department of game and | 0013| fish; and | 0014| WHEREAS, the recommendations rendered encourage continued | 0015| cooperation and partnership to support schools and communities | 0016| to explore multidisciplinary options for teaching environmental | 0017| education; and | 0018| WHEREAS, the state department of public education and | 0019| national math, science and social studies standards and | 0020| benchmarks support incorporating environmental education; and | 0021| WHEREAS, the educational plans for student success | 0022| recognizes the importance of incorporating environmental | 0023| education to emphasize the awareness of New Mexico's | 0024| environmental resources; and | 0025| WHEREAS, examples of these efforts include: | 0001| A. in Cedar Crest, the New Mexico museum of natural | 0002| history and science's environmental classroom; | 0003| B. in Farmington, McKinley elementary teachers Judy | 0004| Johnson and Judy Gonzales' teamwork to teach students about | 0005| life zones; | 0006| C. in Shiprock, Mesa elementary teacher Della Begay | 0007| and her students' research to discover what resources the earth | 0008| provides; | 0009| D. in Silver City, Stout elementary teachers Ms. | 0010| Wakeland and Ms. Von Tress and students writing about a | 0011| composting project; | 0012| E. in Cobre, San Lorenzo elementary teachers' | 0013| planning of the annual campout; | 0014| F. in Carlsbad, early childhood development center | 0015| teacher Sidnia Gardner and students' creation of seven habitat | 0016| areas at the center; | 0017| G. in Roswell, Missouri elementary teacher Glenda | 0018| Sutton's partnership with Yates petroleum through the partners | 0019| in education program; | 0020| H. in Las Cruces, Mesilla Park elementary teacher | 0021| Cathy Kinzer's work with agriculture in the classroom sponsored | 0022| by the farm and livestock bureau; | 0023| I. in Farmington, Heights junior high teacher Becky | 0024| Wing's partnership with BHP minerals to teach life and earth | 0025| science in an outdoor setting; | 0001| J. the city of Farmington department of parks and | 0002| recreation and cultural affairs' plan to construct an | 0003| environmental education center on the Animas river; and | 0004| K.
