0011|     REQUESTING THE CORRECTIONS DEPARTMENT TO CONDUCT A PERFORMANCE

0012|     AUDIT OF ALL CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS.

0014|          WHEREAS, the corrections department is responsible for
    |
0015|     keeping convicts in prison; and
    |
0016|          WHEREAS, the corrections department is responsible for
    |
0017|     ensuring convicts do not pose a threat to the public; and
    |
0018|          WHEREAS, the corrections department is responsible for
    |
0019|     eliminating illegal activities within its facilities; and
    |
0020|          WHEREAS, the corrections department spends well over a
    |
0021|     hundred million taxpayer dollars ($100,000,000) annually; and
    |
0022|          WHEREAS, the corrections department should account for how
    |
0023|     it spends taxpayer money;
    |
0024|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0025|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the corrections department be
    |
0001|     requested to contract for and conduct a performance audit of
    |
0002|     all its programs and spending by July 1, 1997; and
    |
0003|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the corrections department be
    |
0004|     requested to report the findings and recommendations of the
    |
0005|     performance audit to the legislature and the public; and
    |
0006|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0007|     sent to the governor and to the secretary of corrections.
