0011|     REQUESTING THE VAUGHN SCHOOL BOARD TO REINSTATE THE TEACHERS

0012|     WHO WERE SUSPENDED FOR TEACHING CHICANO HISTORY AND RACIAL AND
    |
0013|     RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE.

0015|          WHEREAS, two teachers, Patsy Cordova and Nadine Cordova,
    |
0016|     were suspended from the Vaughn municipal school district for
    |
0017|     teaching language arts students about Cesar Chavez and the
    |
0018|     history of Chicano-Hispano people of New Mexico and the
    |
0019|     southwest; and
    |
0020|          WHEREAS, these two teachers were also reprimanded for
    |
0021|     teaching units on racial and religious tolerance; and
    |
0022|          WHEREAS, the superintendent of Vaughn municipal schools
    |
0023|     intends to recommend to the Vaughn school board that they be
    |
0024|     fired for insubordination; and
    |
0025|          WHEREAS, Patsy and Nadine Cordova are lifelong residents
    |
0001|     of Vaughn, New Mexico and long-time teachers from that
    |
0002|     community; and
    |
0003|          WHEREAS, Chicano studies teach about the history, the
    |
0004|     culture and the five hundred-year struggle of a people's quest
    |
0005|     for equality and justice;
    |
0006|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
    |
0007|     REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the Vaughn
    |
0008|     municipal school district be requested to reinstate, with back
    |
0009|     pay, the suspended teachers and that Chicano studies curricula
    |
0010|     be made available in all schools of the state and that teachers
    |
0011|     be encouraged to teach these curricula so that all students may
    |
0012|     be able to gain knowledge of this ethnic group; and
    |
0013|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0014|     transmitted to the Vaughn school board and the state board of
    |
0015|     education.
