0011|     REQUESTING THAT THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL DIRECT THE

0012|     APPROPRIATE INTERIM COMMITTEE TO ASSESS THE FEASIBILITY OF
    |
0013|     STATE ACQUISITION OF EAGLE NEST LAKE FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT AND
    |
0014|     USE.

0016|          WHEREAS, Eagle Nest lake was constructed in 1918 in the
    |
0017|     scenic Moreno valley of northern New Mexico by the owner, the
    |
0018|     CS cattle company; and
    |
0019|          WHEREAS, Eagle Nest lake has been leased by the state game
    |
0020|     commission for public recreational use at various times in the
    |
0021|     past and is currently leased by the commission for this
    |
0022|     purpose, the lease to expire in the year 2000; and
    |
0023|          WHEREAS, Eagle Nest lake is one of the most productive
    |
0024|     trout fisheries in the United States and is the most productive
    |
0025|     large cold-water lake fishery in the state; and
    |
0001|          WHEREAS, Eagle Nest lake is fished on over eighty-one
    |
0002|     thousand fisherman days annually by individuals who spend
    |
0003|     significantly in the community in pursuit of their sport; and
    |
0004|          WHEREAS, public use of Eagle Nest lake provides tremendous
    |
0005|     economic and recreational benefits to the villages of Eagle
    |
0006|     Nest and Angel Fire, the city of Taos, Colfax and Taos counties
    |
0007|     and the state; and
    |
0008|          WHEREAS, the owners of Eagle Nest lake have expressed a
    |
0009|     willingness to discuss options for state acquisition of the
    |
0010|     lake and surrounding property so that it will remain in public
    |
0011|     use and in a pristine condition in perpetuity;
    |
0012|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0013|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico legislative council be
    |
0014|     requested to direct the appropriate interim committee to meet
    |
0015|     with the owners and assess the feasibility of acquiring Eagle
    |
0016|     Nest lake and the surrounding property for public use,
    |
0017|     including identification of possible properties available for
    |
0018|     exchange; and
    |
0019|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the appropriate interim
    |
0020|     committee report its findings and make recommendations to the
    |
0021|     New Mexico legislative council by December 1, 1997; and
    |
0022|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0023|     transmitted to the New Mexico legislative council.
