0011| ASSURING, AFFIRMING, STRONGLY SUGGESTING THAT THE BOARD OF

0012| REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO PERPETUATE THE
|
0013| CONTINUATION OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN STUDENT SERVICES, EL CENTRO
|
0014| DE LA RAZA STUDENT SERVICES, THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENT
|
0015| SERVICES AND THE WOMEN'S RESOURCE CENTER, KNOWN FOR THEIR
|
0016| ETHNIC AND CULTURE-BASED STUDENT SERVICES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
|
0017| NEW MEXICO.
|

|
0019| WHEREAS, the legislature celebrates and supports New
|
0020| Mexico's diversity, and acknowledges that ethnic and racial
|
0021| diversity contributes to academic excellence and enhances
|
0022| classroom discourse; and
|
0023| WHEREAS, African-American student services, American
|
0024| Indian student services, el centro de la raza and the women's
|
0025| resource center have been on the campus for twenty-five years
|
0001| serving the interests and aspirations of the student
|
0002| population; and
|
0003| WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico graduates more
|
0004| minority students than any other university in the state,
|
0005| including the highest student enrollment of ethnic, minority
|
0006| and women at a four-year research institution in the nation;
|
0007| and
|
0008| WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico actively applies for
|
0009| and receives from the United States department of education the
|
0010| status of minority institution to benefit it for federal
|
0011| funding exclusive to this category of higher education
|
0012| institution; and
|
0013| WHEREAS, tuition pays for services for all people; and
|
0014| WHEREAS, ethnic-, culture-, minority- and gender-based
|
0015| student services are essential to the academic mission of the
|
0016| university of New Mexico in preparing New Mexicans beyond the
|
0017| year 2000;
|
0018| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0019| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the board of regents of the university
|
0020| of New Mexico affirm to maintain ethnic-, culture-, minority-
|
0021| and gender-based student service departments; and
|
0022| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0023| transmitted to the members of the board of regents of the
|
0024| university of New Mexico.
