SANCHEZ | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| REQUESTING THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY | 0012| TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF ESTABLISHING A SCHOOL OF VETERINARY | 0013| SCIENCE. | 0014| | 0015| WHEREAS, New Mexico is a large and still largely rural | 0016| state measured by its population distribution; and | 0017| WHEREAS, agriculture and livestock production are critical | 0018| components of our economy; and | 0019| WHEREAS, New Mexico has one of the best agriculture | 0020| schools in the country, New Mexico state university; and | 0021| WHEREAS, New Mexico has one of the highest numbers of | 0022| students per capita enrolled in four-year veterinary schools of | 0023| any of the states; and | 0024| WHEREAS, New Mexico state university, unlike most | 0025| agriculture schools, has no veterinary school; and | 0001| WHEREAS, New Mexico students interested in veterinary | 0002| science as a career must attend schools in other states, | 0003| raising their educational costs to levels much higher than they | 0004| would encounter if they could attend a veterinary school in New | 0005| Mexico; and | 0006| WHEREAS, eighty-five students, including fifty-five | 0007| veterinary students, are participating this year in the western | 0008| interstate commission on higher education's program of | 0009| interstate student exchange; | 0010| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0011| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the board of regents of New Mexico | 0012| state university be requested to study the feasibility of | 0013| establishing a school of veterinary science at New Mexico state | 0014| university in Las Cruces; and | 0015| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the board of regents report | 0016| its findings and recommendations to the commission on higher | 0017| education and to the appropriate interim committee of the | 0018| legislature by December 1, 1997; and | 0019| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be | 0020| transmitted to the members of the board of regents of New | 0021| Mexico state university. | 0022|  | 0023| | 0024| FORTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE | 0025| FIRST SESSION, 1997 | 0001| | 0002| | 0003| March 15, 1997 | 0004| | 0005| Mr. President: | 0006| | 0007| Your CONSERVATION COMMITTEE, to whom has been referred | 0008| | 0009| SENATE JOINT MEMORIAL 60 | 0010| | 0011| has had it under consideration and reports same with | 0012| recommendation that it DO PASS, and thence referred to the | 0013| FINANCE COMMITTEE. | 0014| | 0015| Respectfully submitted, | 0016| | 0017| | 0018| | 0019| | 0020| __________________________________ | 0021| Michael S.
