0011|     REQUESTING THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC EDUCATION, THE

0012|     LEGISLATIVE EDUCATION STUDY COMMITTEE AND THE NEW MEXICO SCHOOL

0013|     SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION TO COOPERATE IN A STUDY OF SCHOOL
    |
0014|     TRANSPORTATION LAWS AND REGULATIONS AS THEY AFFECT PUBLIC
    |
0015|     SCHOOLS.

0017|          WHEREAS, House Bill 679, as amended, of the first session
    |
0018|     of the forty-third legislature, proposes a significant change
    |
0019|     in the manner of funding school transportation that negatively
    |
0020|     impacts the majority of the school districts; and
    |
0021|          WHEREAS, the current funding formula for school
    |
0022|     transportation has not been fair and equitable to school
    |
0023|     districts; and
    |
0024|          WHEREAS, the school districts need an opportunity to
    |
0025|     provide input into the process and assist the above-mentioned
    |
0001|     agencies in seeking a fair and equitable process for funding
    |
0002|     transportation;
    |
0003|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0004|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state transportation division of
    |
0005|     the state department of public education be requested to
    |
0006|     cooperate with the school superintendents and legislative
    |
0007|     education study committee in studying the policy and procedures
    |
0008|     involved in the funding of school transportation; and
    |
0009|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state transportation
    |
0010|     division of the state department of public education make
    |
0011|     recommendations to the legislature by December 1, 1997 for
    |
0012|     legislation needed to foster development of effective,
    |
0013|     efficient and economical school transportation funding; and
    |
0014|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0015|     transmitted to the state department of public education, the
    |
0016|     legislative education study committee and the New Mexico school
    |
0017|     superintendents association.
