0011|     RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ADOLESCENT SOCIAL ACTION

0012|     PROGRAM AND URGING THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF
    |
0013|     NEW MEXICO TO INCORPORATE THE PROGRAM INTO THE UNIVERSITY OF
    |
0014|     NEW MEXICO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE.

0016|          WHEREAS, the adolescent social action program is a
    |
0017|     collaborative, primary prevention program developed in
    |
0018|     Albuquerque whose goals are to reduce mortality and morbidity
    |
0019|     among adolescents and empower young people to be change agents
    |
0020|     in their communities; and
    |
0021|          WHEREAS, the adolescent social action program was formed
    |
0022|     in 1982 as the alcohol substance abuse prevention program in
    |
0023|     the department of family, community and emergency medicine at
    |
0024|     the university of New Mexico and has since evolved into a
    |
0025|     program with multiple affiliations that provides a unique link
    |
0001|     between the community and the university; and
    |
0002|          WHEREAS, more than three thousand children and families
    |
0003|     throughout New Mexico have received adolescent social action
    |
0004|     program primary prevention services, which include encouraging
    |
0005|     at-risk adolescents to explore drug-free options and
    |
0006|     encouraging youth to work to implement social change; and
    |
0007|          WHEREAS, over the years, community services have included
    |
0008|     research, technical and teacher training and youth social
    |
0009|     action projects such as fotonovellas, community murals,
    |
0010|     involvement in campaigns against tobacco advertising,
    |
0011|     involvement in campaigns against the use of alcohol at the
    |
0012|     state fair, gang prevention task forces and presentations at
    |
0013|     local and national conferences; and
    |
0014|          WHEREAS, the adolescent social action program has provided
    |
0015|     training, practicum experience and education to over four
    |
0016|     hundred university students who act as facilitators with small
    |
0017|     groups of youth; and
    |
0018|          WHEREAS, programs such as the adolescent social action
    |
0019|     program should be encouraged to continue working for the
    |
0020|     betterment of society;
    |
0021|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE
    |
0022|     OF NEW MEXICO that appreciation and encouragement be expressed
    |
0023|     to the staff of the adolescent social action program for its
    |
0024|     work in helping youth from at-risk communities and their role
    |
0025|     in making Albuquerque and New Mexico a better place to live;
    |
0001|     and
    |
0002|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the senate urge the board of
    |
0003|     regents of the university of New Mexico to incorporate the
    |
0004|     adolescent social action program into the university of New
    |
0005|     Mexico school of medicine; and
    |
0006|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
    |
0007|     transmitted to the president of the board of regents and the
    |
0008|     president of the university of New Mexico, to the vice
    |
0009|     president of the health sciences center at the university of
    |
0010|     New Mexico and to the adolescent social action program.
